Avs take trip to Nashville without Sakic

Hockey Betting Lines

12/04/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Colorado Avalanche will continue a three-game road trip tonight without their captain, as they travel to Nashville to take on the Predators at the Sommet Center.

Colorado begin its swing with a 6-5 win in Minnesota on Monday. It did so without Joe Sakic, who will miss the next six weeks due to a herniated disc in his back.

Sakic, 39, has missed nine of Colorado's last 12 games due to his back, though he sat out one of those tests due to a tooth infection. He returned to the lineup last Friday versus the Coyotes, but didn't log many minutes and then was out of the lineup again on Saturday.

Sakic has two goals and 10 assists in 15 games played this year.

The Avalanche didn't need his offense on Monday, scoring a season-high six times in the one-goal win. Paul Stastny lit the lamp twice, including the eventual game-winner that capped a four-goal second period. He also finished with an assist.

Milan Hejduk also notched three points with two helpers and a goal in the second frame. T.J. Hensick also scored in the middle stanza, as Colorado erased a 3-2 deficit with the second-period outburst.

The win came in the opener of a three-game road trip that wraps in Dallas on Friday, and improved the Avs to 6-7-0 on the road this season.

Peter Budaj was victimized for five goals on just 17 shots, but got the win. He was much sharper when he faced the Predators earlier this year, making 26 saves in a 1-0 shutout victory that improved him to 5-2-0 against the club with a 2.23 goals against average.

The Avalanche have won five of its last eight versus the Predators and two of the last three in Nashville.

Dan Ellis started for Nashville in that November 8th outing and 19 saves in the tough-luck loss. However, he was tagged for six goals in his most recent start, which followed his first shutout of the season, so the Predators went with Pekka Rinne in goal in Monday's game versus Buffalo.

The move paid off, as Rinne stopped all 30 shots faced in a 2-0 win that was his first-career shutout. The 26-year-old is now 4-0-0 in six starts this year and has never faced the Avs.

Jason Arnott and J.P. Dumont tallied for the Predators, who have won three of their last five. Arnott has five goals in his last five games, including one in each of his last three games.

Nashville has lost its last three at home and is 5-3-1 at the Sommet Center this year.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds

Will he or won't he?  Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach in Wade Phillips, the big question will be: Does Terrell Owens stay with the team.

Jerry Jones continues to suggest that Terrell Owens will remain with the team.

"I've said that he's back, he's here, he's under contract," Jones said. "In the interviews I've just been through (to hire a new coach), it was very clear to me how highly he's thought of and how much of an impact he had on our offensive success."

Just to be sure though, Terrell Owens cleared out his locker and removed his name plate.

Terrell Owens was among the Cowboys most productive players this past season, catching 85 passes for 1,180 yards and a league-best 13 touchdowns.

But T.O. is due a $3 million roster bonus in June, then a $5 million salary this season. Cutting him before then would save a lot of money and headaches.

Aside from the questions surrounding Terrell Owens, the oddsmakers at MySportsbook.com have concerns over starting quarterback Tony Romo's state of mind and whether he will remain a starting quarterback.  It is also not known how players will adjust to new head coach, Wade Phillips.
