Choi wins Skins Game with $415,000

Golf Betting Lines

11/30/2008 - Indian Wells, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - K.J. Choi pocketed $270,000 for a birdie on the 18th hole Sunday, giving him a big win at the Skins Game.

Choi finished the 18-hole, two-day event with six total skins and $415,000.

The seven-time PGA Tour winner rolled in an 11-foot putt on the last hole to take the final two skins. The other three players in the foursome -- Phil Mickelson, Rocco Mediate and Stephen Ames -- all missed birdie putts.

"This week was fantastic," said Choi. "I'm very proud."

Ames, who was the two-time defending champion, finished in second place with $250,000 that he earned on the first hole Sunday. It was worth six skins; five carried over from Saturday.

Mickelson won three skins Sunday and finished with four overall for $195,000 and third place. Mediate took fourth place with $140,000 he earned on a late birdie.

Including the five skins that carried over from Saturday, there was $900,000 up for grabs on the final nine holes.

As is custom at this Thanksgiving weekend staple, the players kept the mood light -- even at the first hole Sunday, when there were six skins and $250,000 on the line.

"Everybody's night good?" Mediate, a fan favorite, asked the gallery before teeing off. When he didn't get a response, he quipped: "No? They're not talkative today."

Ames won the $250,000 prize on the par-four 10th at Indian Wells' Celebrity Course with a six-foot birdie putt set up by a tight approach shot from the left rough. The other three players all made par, with Choi missing a 10-foot birdie putt that would have halved the hole.

"The numbers turned out right for me on the second shot," Ames said of his approach.

The next two holes were halved -- Mediate was involved in both, splitting the 11th with Ames and the 12th with Choi -- leaving Mickelson to win three skins and $170,000 with a tap-in birdie at the 13th.

Choi added to his $75,000 total from Saturday with a five-foot eagle putt at the 14th hole that earned him $70,000.

Mediate, still the only player without a single skin through 15 holes, earned two of them with a short birdie putt at the par-three 16th worth $140,000. Ames missed a birdie putt there that would have halved the hole.

Many in the crowd yelled "Rocco!" at the prospect of Mediate's first skins -- joining the thousands who have supported the popular player since he took Tiger Woods to a playoff at the U.S. Open.

His birdie left each player with a realistic chance to win the event on the final two holes, worth $270,000 together after the $70,000 skin on 17th was pushed to the 18th.

All four players found the fairway off the tee and the green on their approach shots.

But it was Choi who took the final hole's $200,000 prize -- the "super skin" -- plus the additional $70,000 with his 11-foot birdie putt.
