Report: Oswalt agrees to waive no-trade clause

Baseball Betting Lines

07/29/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Houston's Roy Oswalt has agreed to waive his no-trade clause, according to multiple media reports, and will be dealt from the Astros to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia cited a person closely involved with the negotiations in reporting Oswalt's decision. The report said in addition to Oswalt, the Phillies will receive cash, while sending pitcher J.A. Happ and two prospects to Houston.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, which also reported that Oswalt approved the deal according to a baseball source, said that minor league outfielder Anthony Gose is also part of the package the Phillies will send the Astros.

Oswalt is owed approximately $5 million for the remainder of this season. He's due to make $16 million next season and there is a club option of $16 million in 2012 or a $2 million buyout.

The 32-year-old Oswalt, who has only pitched for Houston over his 10-year career, is 6-12 with a 3.42 ERA this season. He's lost his last two starts, but has received little run support from his team. In fact, the Astros have scored two runs or less each of the last six times he's pitched.

With 143 wins, Oswalt is one victory shy of matching Joe Niekro as the all- time leader in Astros franchise history.

The addition of Oswalt would give the surging Phillies a powerful 1-2-3 punch in the rotation, led by Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels.

The Phillies have won a season-best seven games in a row and were 3 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East standings following Wednesday's games. The Astros are well out of the playoff race at 42-59.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
